As February arrives, we recognize and celebrate Black History Month, a time dedicated to honouring the achievements, resilience, and contributions of black individuals throughout history. At the BIPOC Business Society, we believe in uplifting and empowering black voices, especially within the business community. This month is not just about reflection; it is about taking meaningful action to support and amplify black excellence in all its forms.
The Origins of Black History Month
Black History Month was founded by Carter G. Woodson in 1926 as "Negro History

Week" to bring awareness to the pivotal role black individuals have played in shaping society. Originally observed during the second week of February (to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass), it evolved into a month-long celebration in 1976 in the United States and later adopted by Canada, the UK, and other nations.
The significance of this month extends beyond historical acknowledgment. It is a
movement toward correcting systemic erasure, challenging stereotypes, and highlighting the depth and breadth of black contributions across industries, including business, finance, innovation, and leadership.
Why Black History Month Matters
Black history is an integral part of world history. It is not confined to struggles but also triumphs, stories of resilience, entrepreneurship, and groundbreaking achievements. For centuries, black leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries have shaped industries and driven economic progress, yet their stories have often been overlooked.
For BIPOC students, professionals, and aspiring entrepreneurs, recognizing these
contributions is crucial. It fosters a sense of belonging, representation, and empowerment, inspiring the next generation to break barriers and redefine success on their own terms.
How We Should Acknowledge and Participate
Engagement during Black History Month should extend beyond performative actions. There are some meaningful ways to acknowledge and celebrate this important month including supporting black-owned businesses, whether it’s purchasing from black entrepreneurs, promoting their work, or collaborating with them, investing in black businesses contributes to economic equity. Be sure to educate yourself and others by reading books, watching documentaries, and attending discussions that highlight black history and culture. Knowledge is
a powerful tool in dismantling biases and fostering inclusion. We can also make and effort to amplify black voices, engage with black content creators, artists, and thought leaders. Use your platform to share their perspectives and celebrate their achievements. Engage in conversations about racial equity by attending events, participating in discussions, and advocating for policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia and the workplace. Lastly, participate in events and initiatives, the BIPOC Business Society hosts panels, networking events, and
workshops that can help highlight black professionals in business. Stay engaged and join us in these conversations.
